What “Sparks Joy” in Your Garden?

These past few weeks I have enjoyed catching up on some TV and came across a very small but mighty force…Marie Kondo. Have you heard of her? Anyway, Marie has a highly successful series now showing on Netflix and it’s all about tidying up your home and de-cluttering your life. ..

I am all for decluttering but find that I don’t do it often enough these days. I did however and quite coincidentally kick off 2019 with a huge tidy up of my home office. My desk is clean and clear and I am ready to embrace all of the possibilities that 2019 has to offer…now back to Marie Kondo.

I found the shows I watched quite inspiring. It got me thinking…what about Marie Kondoing (my new verb) the garden?

Have you got plants in your garden that no longer “spark joy” for you? This is what Marie encourages you to consider in the home and garage but I say, why not the garden too.

Take a look around your garden, is there a plant that you put in to simply fill a gap, years ago or maybe when you were just getting started? Maybe you picked it up on a bargain table at a nursery and just popped it in. Marie suggests that if things do not “spark joy” in your heart then you should “Thank” them and move them on either to the trash or to someone else who needs them.

Maybe you started succulent collection years ago but actually don’t really love those plants and they don’t “spark joy” for you anymore. Well, it’s time to Thank them and move them on…are you a member of your local Facebook Buy Nothing page? That’s a great place to pay things forward to others in your local area. Hopefully, your old plants will “spark joy” for someone in your local community.

Does your succulent collection “spark joy”?

Do you have roses in your garden that are not thriving and no longer “spark joy” for you? Maybe they were once in sun but since the garden has grown are in too much shade. How about your lawn? Is it looking tired and uninspiring? Is it time to consider an alternative?

This dainty tropical Hibiscus is just lovely beside the pool fence

Last year, I removed a lime tree, I thought to myself, this thing has had so much love and attention and yet she’s not producing any limes and always looks distressed..not sparking joy….time to go!

Clerondenrum “Bleeding Heart” a joy at this time of the year

I have some tired looking hanging baskets, they looked lovely through the spring but they aren’t sparking joy for me anymore so time for some plants to go and new ones to be added. How are your containers looking post-Christmas??? Don’t walk past sad looking containers, time to rip out what’s past its “joy” stage and create something new that gives you pleasure.

Lovely Frangipani, sparking joy for me right now

It’s a new year, so, as you’re enjoying your summer break or your sunny Sundays, why not grab a cup of tea and take a wander around your garden and consider the plants in your garden that are “sparking joy” for you, if they are not doing it for you then maybe it’s time they were moved on and some new ones brought into your garden.
